San Diego State furthered their lead on Houston in the Las Vegas Bowl thanks to this Ron Smith interception

The 2016 Las Vegas Bowl did not get off to a good start for the San Diego State Aztecs, as the Houston Cougars took a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. However, since then, the Aztecs have just clicked on both sides of the ball and they’ve shutout the Cougars heading into the fourth quarter.

San Diego State is getting help from playmakers all over the field on Saturday, and the latest man to come up with a play was freshman defensive back Ron Smith.

After Donnel Pumphrey found the end zone in the third quarter as he inches towards Ron Dayne’s mark, Houston was looking to get that high-powered offense rolling to get themselves back into this one. Well, things didn’t quite work out so well there.

Smith picked off Greg Ward Jr. and proceeded to take it 54 yards to the house for the score and the 20-10 lead.

It really has been impressive, the show that this team has put on Saturday. It did look like this one could get out of hand in the opening quarter, but San Diego State got everyone to buckle down and it’s given them the lead in one of the first bow games of this postseason.

This Aztecs defensive unit has been mighty impressive at times this season, and now they’re coming up when the team really needs them the most. If they keep shutting down Houston and if Pumphrey keeps rolling, then they’re heading into next season with a lot of momentum with a bowl win.
