The Trojans of Troy come to Los Angeles to take on the Trojans of USC for the campus segment of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic on Dec. 17.
No. 24 USC remains one of the teams that has managed to remain undefeated on the season. The Trojans are off to their best start since 1971 and they’re just dipping their toes in the Associated Press polls with a spot at No. 24. USC is sitting atop a 9-0 record with key wins over Texas A&M and SMU. Their spot in the polls reflects their strength of schedule; those key wins are the biggest names in their repertoire so far, with other victories coming from a spate of West Coast Conference schools including BYU, Pepperdine and San Diego, as well as UCSB. With that said, the big test will come when USC starts conference play.
USC’s Elijah Stewart has been averaging 17.1 points per game while nailing 83.3 percent of his free throws. Troy will do well to keep Stewart from getting to the line and giving up points to USC.
Troy has won four of the last five games, with that loss coming against South Florida on Dec. 1. Forward Jordon Varnado leads the team with 15.7 points per game with a 53.9 field goal percentage. He’s also hitting 73 percent of his free throws. As a team, Troy is averaging 81.4 points per game, which puts them almost dead even with USC, which has been averaging 82.7.
