2. Kirk Cousins

Brees and Romo are both old, while Foles is a backup quarterback for a reason. So neither of those options are overly enticing to the Chiefs. Should Kansas City desire to make a splash to replace Alex Smith, there would be no bigger splash than Kirk Cousins. The Washington Redskins quarterback will be a free agent after the 2016 season. It would take a monumental failure by the front office for him to leave the Skins, but if he does, the Chiefs are a flawless fit for him.

Cousins would thrive in a well balanced offense like Kansas City’s. He has to throw the ball a lot in the Redskins offense and has had a lot of success doing so. Imagine if he had Tyreke Hill to throw to. Jordan Reed is among the NFL’s top tight ends, but he’s not elite like Travis Kelce. Jeremy Maclin would be a very tempting target to throw to as well, and unlike Alex Smith, Cousins could take advantage of his ability to make deep catches.

There’s no reason to believe the Redskins will part with their star quarterback. It’s also worth noting their front office is much better without Dan Snyder butting in all the time. But if the Chiefs play their cards right and get a little bit lucky, Cousins could be the perfect replacement for Alex Smith.
