Twitter was not happy with Christian McCaffrey’s decision to sit out the Sun Bowl. Here are some of the best reactions.
Christian McCaffrey made a very controversial decisions by choosing to sit out the Sun Bowl in order to prepare for the 2017 NFL Draft. The decision is likely the one best for his future. However, football is a team sport, so this didn’t go over well on Twitter.
Many claim McCaffrey is being selfish and not a team player. This might be the case, but it’s a rare situation where looking out for yourself is the right move. No one on the field is going to care that McCaffrey is a likely first round pick. Why even risk injury when millions of dollars are at stake? Kids dream about playing in the NFL. Doing what’s necessary to ensure the dream comes true is justifiable.
It’s worth noting McCaffrey is responsible for making Stanford a lot of money. And he’s done it in exchange for a full scholarship. While a scholarship to the prestigious university is a solid way to get compensated, right now, that means nothing to McCaffrey. Stanford has given him the opportunity to play and he has made them a lot of money. McCaffrey doesn’t owe Stanford or the NCAA anything.
His teammates probably understand why he doesn’t want to take such an unnecessary risk. If he plays well, that likely changes nothing. However, if McCaffrey fails or gets injured, that likely costs him a huge amount of money. Playing in the Sun Bowl provides him with minimal reward, but noticeably more risk.
