Purdue added yet another impressive win to its resume with an 86-81 win over No. 21 Notre Dame just a week after beating Arizona State by 33. The Boilermakers’ only losses on the season came against defending champ Villanova and a ranked Louisville team.
The Boilermakers are an exceptional shooting team, making 50 percent of their shots from the floor and about 44 percent from long-range. That’s the kind of thing that can drive an opponent crazy when they can’t stop three-point shooting.
Sophomore star Caleb Swanigan has been the team’s top performer, averaging 16.8 points and 11.1 rebounds per game on the year. He’s filling in nicely for a departed A.J. Hammons and Isaac Haas joins him in the post, averaging 14 points and five rebounds per game.
Western Illinois isn’t having the best season thus far, going just 3-7 in its first 10 games. The Leathernecks haven’t had the toughest schedule, playing just one power conference team in Kansas State and still putting together a lackluster start to the season.
The Leathernecks haven’t done anything exceptionally well this season, averaging just 13 assists to 15 turnovers per game. Also, they are shooting just 37 percent from three-point range and only 42 percent from the floor.
Two players average in double figures for the Leathernecks this season as Garret Covington leads the way with 21 points per game and knocking down 41 percent of his threes. Getting Mike Miklusak back was big as well as he’s averaging 15 points and 9.2 rebounds in the five games he’s played this season.
