The Baylor Bears football program may still have some toxicity inside of it, but hiring Matt Rhule away from the Temple Owls was about as good of a hire that Baylor was going to get this trip on the coaching carousel.

Rhule had spent the last four years leading the Owls football program. His teams won the AAC East division title the last two years. Rhule’s 2016 Owls beat the Navy Midshipmen to win the AAC outright, Temple’s first conference championship since 1967.

Leaving Temple had to have been hard for Rhule, as he had been with the program for nine of the last 10 years. He has Pennsylvania routes as a former Penn State Nittany Lions linebacker. It was weird to see Rhule leave the Mid-Atlantic for Texas, but he could be the disciplinarian Baylor needs to get this program back on track.

It may take Rhule a few years to get his recruiting roots in Texas, but if he can win at a program like Temple, he could be the right type of head coach to keep Baylor relevant in the post-Art Briles are in Waco.
