Who could walk out a winner in the Dollar General Bowl between Ohio and Troy?
On Friday, December 23, the Dollar General Bowl will take place. This isn’t the most important bowl of the college football postseason, but it will see two successful Group of Five teams from the 2016 season go to battle. Ohio vs. Troy will take place from the Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, AL.
Ohio is coming off an 8-5 season, most recently losing to No. 17 Western Michigan. Before that, they beat Akron, 9-3 in a field goal fest. The latter half of the season, including these two games, have seen quarterback Quinton Maxwell take over the starting spot. He has bounced back and forth with Greg Windham for the job, though, with both players struggling. Both barely got their completion percentages above 55-percent, but have protected the ball well with just eight interceptions.
On the other hand, the Bobcats’ running game has been effective with five players crossing 200 yards. Dorian Brown is the leader of the pack with 802 yards on 150 carries for four touchdowns.
Troy finished the 2016 season at 9-3, including going on a seven-game winning streak during the middle of the year. They ended the year with losses in two of their last three matchups, though, including a 35-3 blowout defeat to Arkansas State.
Most recently, the Trojans went down to the sub-.500 Georgia Southern team, 28-24, after quarterback Kevin Ellison ran all over them for four touchdowns and 100-plus yards on both sides of the ball. Troy allowed over 200 rushing yards that game, one of their highest totals of the season.
Troy had a balanced offense throughout the year. They were led by quarterback Brandon Silvers and running back Jordan Chunn, who led this offense to over 5,000 total yards, 2,112 of which were on the ground. Can they continue their success with the final game of the season?
