United States international Julian Green leaving Bayern Munich to join Stuttgart in January transfer window

United States international Julian Green is leaving Bayern Munich for Stuttgart in second division of the German Bundesliga.

Green will sign a contract with Stuttgart until June 2019 when the transfer window reopens on New Year’s Day. Stuttgart were regulated from the Bundesliga last season, but currently sit in third in the second division.

Many thought that Green was ready for stardom after scoring for the United States in a 2014 World Cup knockout stage game against Belgium as a 19-yea- old. But, Green failed to secure regular playing time with Bayern Munich.

Green joined the Bayern youth academy as a 15-year old, but has never been able to establish himself as a first team player for the German champions. Following his World Cup goal, Green went to Hamburger on loan, but only made five appearances for the club.

At Bayern, Green could never earn regular first-team minutes from former manager Pep Guardiola or current manager Carlo Ancelotti. In three years with the club, Green only made four appearances for the club, scoring one goal.

Stuck behind Thomas Muller, Thiago, Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Douglas Costa for playing time at Bayern. Green was never able to break into the lineup, despite significant injury problems for both Robben and Ribery.

Over the past two summer transfer windows, Bayern signed 19-year old Portuguese international Renato Sanches and 20-year-old French international Kingsley Coman, pushing Green further down the pecking order.

The move had become a necessity for Green if he wants to live up to the people’s expectations following the World Cup. At Stuttgart, Green should be able to receive regular playing time, something he has never been able to do in his professional career.

Stuttgart currently sit in third in the second division of the Bundesliga, level with second place Hanover with 32 points.
