BYU(-10.5) vs. Wyoming at San Diego(5):
BYU(8-4)
Wins: vs. Arizona(18-16), vs. Toledo(55-53), at Michigan State(31-14), vs. Mississippi State(28-21), at Cincinnati(20-3), vs. Southern Utah(37-7), vs. Massachusetts(51-9), vs. Utah State(28-10)
Losses: at Utah(19-20), vs. UCLA(14-17), vs. West Virginia(32-35), at Boise State(27-28)
Record vs. bowl teams: 2-3
The Cougars, led by veteran QB Taysom Hill, lost their four games by a total of eight points. That said, their schedule doesn’t look all that tough in hindsight. Utah and West Virginia are solid teams, but Michigan State and UCLA didn’t turn out to be. Hill’s playmaking ability and BYU’s defensive prowess keep them in every game. Tanner Mangum will start this game over Hill, but we should see Hill at some point.
Wyoming(8-5, 6-3 Mountain West):
Wins: vs. Northern Illinois(40-34), vs. California-Davis(45-22), at Colorado State(38-17), vs. Air Force(35-26), at Nevada(42-34), vs. Boise State(30-28), vs. Utah State(52-28), vs. San Diego State(34-33)
Losses: at Nebraska(17-52), at Eastern Michigan(24-27), at UNLV(66-69), at New Mexico(35-56), vs. San Diego State(24-27)
Record vs. bowl teams: 4-4
Wyoming goes as far as running back Brian Hill takes them. The Cowboys struggled against teams that could stop the run, which doesn’t bode well for them in this game. The Cowboy defense has given up a lot of points this year. They were involved in the highest scoring game of the year. A game that saw three overtimes and 135 total points. Don’t expect anything near that here.
Prediction:
Really? That is a lot of points for a team that likes to slow the game down. I don’t think that they will be able to keep Wyoming totally under wraps. Both teams manhandled Utah State, but Wyoming beat a Boise team that BYU lost to. The difference? The Cowboys pulled the upset in Laramie. The Cougars lost in Boise. At any rate, all signs point to a close game. Like within single digits.
Pick: Wyoming
