Hawaii vs. Middle Tennessee State(-6.5) at Honolulu, HI(3):
Hawaii(6-7, 4-4 Mountain West):
Wins: vs. Tennessee-Martin(41-36), vs. Nevada(38-17), at San Jose State(34-17), at Air Force(34-27), at Fresno State(14-13), vs. Massachusetts(46-40)
Losses: vs. California(31-51), at Michigan(3-63), at Arizona(28-47), vs. UNLV(38-41), vs. New Mexico(21-28), at San Diego State(0-55), vs. Boise State(16-52)
Record vs. bowl teams: 1-5
Marcus Kemp may be the best receiver that you have never heard of, but Dru Brown isn’t always consistent enough to get him the ball. The Hawaii defense has been mostly non-existent this year with the exception of an ugly game against Fresno. This is a home game for Hawaii, and they need every advantage they can get.
Middle Tennessee State(8-4, 5-3 Conference USA):
Wins: vs. Alabama A&M(55-0), at Bowling Green(41-21), vs. Louisiana Tech(38-34), at North Texas(30-13), at Missouri(51-45), at Florida International(42-35), at Charlotte(38-31), vs. Florida Atlantic(77-56)
Losses: at Vanderbilt(24-47), vs. Western Kentucky(43-44), vs. UTSA(25-45), at Marshall(17-42)
Record vs. bowl teams: 2-3
The loss to Marshall looks really bad, but quarterback Brent Stockstill was hurt in that game. He will be able to make his return for the bowl game, but for some reason the oddsmakers still don’t believe in him. I can understand the apprehension, but they do have some other good skill players on this team. I’Tavius Mathers ran for over 1,500 yards, and Richie James had nearly 1,500 yards receiving.
Prediction:
On paper, this looks like a huge mismatch. Will Stockstill have some rust coming back from a broken collarbone? Is he 100%? Even with these questions, it isn’t enough to make me doubt this pick. The only reason that this isn’t a five pointer is because Hawaii is at home, and strange things have happened there.
Pick: Middle Tennessee State
