Kyrie Irving was well defended by Klay Thompson as time ran down, but the Cleveland Cavaliers star still wet his game-winning fadeaway.

The Golden State Warriors had to feel some sort of comfort with the lead they built over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Christmas Day. At one point late in the second half, they led by double-digits and the outcome seemed certain. Of course, you’d think that the Warriors would’ve learned from the 2016 NBA Finals that the Cavaliers can come back from any deficit. But apparently they did not and, in the end, Kyrie Irving tried to pound home the lesson further.

Thanks to some fantastic plays from LeBron James, Richard Jefferson, and Irving down the stretch, Cleveland erased the lead throughout the fourth quarter. With under a minute to play, it was a one-possession game. And after a shot-clock violation by the Warriors, the Cavs trailed by one point with the shot clock then turned off.

Suffice it to say that was the time when it’s good to have one of the best isolation players in the world, Irving, on your team. With Klay Thompson draped all over him, Irving backed him down trying to find any sort of room. Though there wasn’t much, Irving still managed to get the shot up on a short fadeaway. As he’s done so many times before, he wet it to give Cleveland the lead:

The Warriors obviously got one more possession (one full of controversy regarding a possible foul), but couldn’t get a good look. Thus, Kyrie’s effort was the game-winner, and a beautiful one at that.

Obviously Irving and the Cavaliers have been rolling this season off winning the title a year ago. However, a win like this is huge for them. As the Warriors try to live up to the hype following the addition of Kevin Durant, a win like this shows that Cleveland can still get the edge over them. That’s massive for their confidence now and, as most are predicting, if they meet in the Finals again.
