There are six unbeatens left; who falls first?
There are six remaining unbeaten teams in college basketball with a chance to finish the season undefeated, but history tells us that’s a difficult proposition. No team has gone undefeated for a full college basketball season since Indiana pulled it off in 1976. Not surprisingly, the chances of an undefeated team in 2016-17 are low. Here’s a look at the six teams, their first projected loss and the likelihood that they finish the season unbeaten:
Only three teams have a better than one percent chance to finish the season without a loss. UCLA will face tough road tests in Pac-12 play against the likes of Arizona and Oregon, but the Bruins high-octane offense could get the job done. Villanova, meanwhile, is actually favored in every one of its remaining regular season contests, but because of the cumulative difficulty of the Big East schedule, there’s a low chance that the Wildcats actually finish the season undefeated.
Gonzaga actually has the best chance of hitting the postseason with an unblemished resume. This is, of course, largely because of the lack of competition in the West Coast Conference where only Saint Mary’s figures to really push the Bulldogs to their limit. Still, at 7.3 percent, it’s unlikely that Mark Few’s team can pull off a zero loss record.
