Robert Griffin III’s status for the Week 17 finale remains up in the air.

Even though the Cleveland Browns witnessed a Christmas miracle Saturday with their first victory of the season, it took rookie QB Cody Kessler to finish the job. Robert Griffin III left Saturday’s game in the fourth quarter after suffering a concussion. On Monday, head coach Hue Jackson confirmed that Griffin is still in the concussion protocol.

Now, it remains a mystery who will start for Cleveland on New Year’s Day when they travel to play the Pittsburgh Steelers. While this story may have no relevance to the NFL playoff picture, the Browns have a chance to be winners of two straight by season’s end. It was nice to see the emotion that went into getting that first victory for head coach Hue Jackson. No matter who is under center Sunday, I’m sure this team will want to get their coach another.

RGIII’s career has been quite the series of unfortunate events since his rookie year. After setting the league on fire with Washington back in 2012, injuries have derailed his performance and confidence. Some thought maybe a fresh start in Cleveland would be the answer, but 2016 was just more of the same for Griffin. His mobility barely resembles what it once was, and he has been forced to play a style of quarterback that poorly suits him. It looked as though Griffin would be a threat for years to come, but unfortunately that has not been the case.

With a top pick coming in this spring’s draft, time will tell if the Browns want to invest in a top QB prospect. With the options available on their roster, it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea. However, pundits are expressing that this is a weak quarterback class. Then again, all it takes is to find one guy. Either way, Cleveland is going to have to figure it out.
