NHL Rumors: Artemi Panarin agrees to extension with Blackhawks
Artemi Panarin and the Blackhawks have reportedly agreed to a unique two-year extension
One of the top priorities for the Chicago Blackhawks lately has been locking up their core talent as quickly as possible. They have already done so with Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Corey Crawford, Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook. According to The Atlantic, the Blackhawks and Artemi Panarin have agreed on an extension. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman confirmed the report with the alleged terms.
Getting Panarin locked up is huge for Chicago, as Panarin was set to be a restricted free agent after the 2016-17 NHL season. After an impressive 2015-16 rookie campaign, the Blackhawks began talks with Panarin’s representatives this summer. A two-year extension is obviously not ideal, as Chicago would have preferred to go long-term. However, Panarin’s production likely created a situation where a bridge deal was the best option for both sides.
Panarin certainly has the resume necessary for a long-term deal. He won the Calder Trophy for being the NHL’s top rookie during the 2015-16 season. Not only that, don’t believe it’s merely a coincidence Patrick Kane had his most productive season while being flanked by Panarin.
In his first 117 games as of Dec. 28, he has 114 points, averaging just short of a point per game. After putting in 77 points last season, Panarin has 37 points in 37 games so far this season. Kane and the former KHL forward are directly responsible for most of Chicago’s offense.

There will be some fallout to this extension, just as there has been for past extensions by the Blackhawks. Marcus Kruger might be on his way out. Even with the expansion draft, some salary cap dumps will likely be required. While there will be some salary cap maneuvering, it will be well worth it.
