Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Josh Malone hauled in a bomb from quarterback Joshua Dobbs and raced into the end zone for a late score.
After a scoreless first quarter between the Tennessee Volunteers and Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Music City Bowl, the two teams began to light up the field with big plays on offense. Tennessee quarterback Joshua Dobbs put together three rushing touchdowns to remind everyone of the plays that he can make with his feet, but he made one with his arm late in the game to Josh Malone.
After Nebraska had cut the deficit to just seven points, the Volunteers needed to answer their opponent with a big drive. Having set a tone all day on offense, Dobbs decided to take a chance deep down the field with his arm. As Dobbs let go of the football, Malone got past the secondary and was able to bring in the pass and sprint into the end zone for the 59-yard touchdown.
The pass came at a time when Nebraska was really starting to build momentum and felt they could get the stop and get the ball back. Unfortunately for them, Dobbs kept rolling just as he had all day prior and finally got on the board with a passing touchdown.
Malone has been a deep threat favorite of Dobbs for a while and his footwork to get away from the secondary was exceptional here. He kept his eyes on the football the entire time and made sure to follow it all the way into his arms instead of running without the ball.
He was rewarded for his patience by being able to run right into an open end zone and extend his team’s lead over the Cornhuskers. When the game was tight and neither side gave an inch, Dobbs forced the issue for his team.
