Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Stoops hates the cut blocking tactics of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets’ triple option and rips Paul Johnson for it.

The triple option attack was once commonplace in the college football landscape. It dominated the sport back in the 1980s and 1990s in major college football, but has now been relegated to service academies and with the ACC’s Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson brought the triple option to Atlanta from Navy when he took over the Yellow Jacket program back in 2008. Everybody that plays Georgia Tech annually (ACC Coastal, Clemson, and Georgia) knows the nuances of the Yellow Jacket running game.

Apparently Kentucky Wildcats head coach Mark Stoops didn’t get the memo. He went right after Johnson with a verbal assault after seeing one of his players get cut blocked in the 2016 TaxSlayer Bowl.

Is cutting blocking legal? Yes, but not terribly ethical. Nevertheless, it’s part of the run blocking scheme of Georgia Tech’s triple option, so get used to it. The triple option is highly effective against a lackluster running defense with slow linebackers. It also does tend to catch opponents by surprise that don’t see it regularly, making Georgia Tech especially dangerous in the non-conference and in bowl games.

Stoops chewing out Johnson is understandable from his perspective, but he failed to realize that this was the type of blocking scheme he would have to go up against when playing Georgia Tech in the TaxSlayer Bowl.

This verbal lashing by Stoops in a way illustrates that this is his first bowl game as a head coach and how Johnson has been to many bowl games before at bowl Georgia Tech and at Navy. Expect this game to intensify the rest of the way.
