The Minnesota Golden Gophers recently fired Tracy Claeys after the suspension of 10 players from a pending sexual assault charge.

The firing of Tracy Claeys ends the saga that has cast a dark cloud over the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team. Recently, 10 players were accused by a woman who claimed was forced into sex.

The 10 players were immediately suspended for their upcoming Holiday Bowl against Washingtonian State. The team would then threaten to boycott the bowl game, stating lack of due process among their teammates. The team would digress their holdout and elected to play, defeating Washington State 17-12.

Minnesota head coach Tracy Claeys was fired by the University this past Tuesday. Athletic Director Mark Coyle believed the football program needed “integrity and class.” Apparently, according to Coyle, Claeys didn’t fit that description based on how he handled the situation.

Former Minnesota Gophers head coach Jerry Kill didn’t agree with the firing at all. Kill was the head coach for the Golden Gophers for five seasons before health issues caused him to step down in 2015. Kill spoke on the situation on 1500 ESPN Radio.

"“I won’t be stepping foot back in the stadium,” Kill, who is now Rutgers’ offensive coordinator, said on 1500 ESPN radio on Wednesday. “And I won’t be stepping back into the university.”“We gave our best to the state of Minnesota,” Kill said. “We’ll always come to Minnesota. My daughter is there. We love Minnesota. I’ll go to every baseball game, (Vikings) football game, anything else. But I will not ever be in that stadium or that complex. And they’re building a new complex. We had a lot to do with that. I won’t ever see it. But I wish them all the luck in the world."

It’s interesting to hear those comments by Kill, but of course, it won’t change the outcome. Now the Gophers are expected to do better, much better, and we aren’t talking about the on-field performance.
