Ryan Hartman gets very unique hat trick (Video)
Ryan Hartman of the Chicago Blackhawks got one of the most unique and weird hat tricks in the history of the NHL.
Hat tricks aren’t too common in the NHL. Players rarely get more than one per year and most go their entire careers without scoring three goals in one game. Ryan Hartman of the Chicago Blackhawks got one of the weirdest ones you’ll ever see on Sunday against the Nashville Predators.
He’s not much of a goal scorer and certainly not someone you’d predict to score three goals on any given night. Hartman had just seven goals in 45 career NHL games entering Sunday. Even in the AHL, he has just 31 goals in 139 games. Hartman is a high energy player and surprisingly good at agitating his opponents, but he’s not known for goal scoring.
Not only did the Blackhawks forward get a hat trick, it was a natural hat trick. He scored three consecutive goals. Here’s where it gets weird: Hartman’s first goal was the only goal he scored with a goaltender in the opposing net.
Teammate Richard Panik’s shot went off of him and into the goal. It got reviewed because the net moved. However, the league ruled it was a good goal, as the puck crossed the line before the goal moved.
Hartman can thank Panik for his second goal. This goal was scored on an empty net. Ever the gentleman, Panik could have tapped in Hartman’s shot but chose to allow Hartman to get proper credit for it. What a teammate.
Much like his second goal, his third tally was on an empty net. The Predators got aggressive and were still pushing to get another goal despite being down 4-2. With 30 seconds left, Hartman scored the least weird goal of his hat trick, putting the puck in from past center ice.

Just your average hat trick. One goal on a play you didn’t even shoot, an empty net goal involving a teammate you just stole a goal from making sure you get credit for it, and another empty net goal.
