Alex Ovechkin gets 1000th career point (Video)
Alex Ovechkin joined an exclusive club on Wednesday night with his 1,000th career point.
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has written his name in the history books on numerous occasions. He already has the record for most goals by a Russian born player. Last season, Ovechkin joined the exclusive 500 goals club on Jan. 10. Just over a year later, he has joined the 1,000 points club, becoming the 84th player in NHL history to reach the elusive milestone.
It’s only appropriate Ovechkin joined the club courtesy of a goal. And naturally, he managed to do it against the Pittsburgh Penguins on national television. Some of Ovechkin’s best games have come against Washington’s most hated rival.
The Great Eight is the fourth Russian player to reach 1,000 career points. He joins Sergei Fedorov, Alexander Mogilny, and Alexei Kovalev. Ovechkin is one of seven active members of the exclusive club, along with Jaromir Jagr, Patrick Marleau, Jarome Iginla, Joe Thornton, Marian Hossa, and Patrik Elias.
He is the 13th non-North American skater to get to 1,000 career points. Other Europeans on the exclusive list include Hossa, Elias, Mats Sundin, and Teemu Selanne. With his goal, Ovechkin has passed Montreal Canadiens legend Maurice Richard on the career goals list. He is 16 goals away from passing another Habs legend Guy Lafleur for 25th place on the all-time goals list.
Ovechkin holds the Capitals franchise records in goals, even strength goals, points, power play goals, game winning goals, and shots on goal. This is his 48th career point against the Penguins, which is tied for seventh with the Flyers. Ovechkin has his most points against the Winnipeg Jets franchise, with 82 points against them in 61 games.
Ovi becomes the first player to hit 1,000 points while in a Capitals sweater. Other 1,000 point players to play for the team include Adam Oates, Jagr, Larry Murphy, and Mike Gartner.
