Barcelona 5-0 Las Palmas: Highlights and recap
Barcelona beat Las Palmas 5-0 in La Liga action on Saturday. Here are all the highlights from the match.
It will be a quick turnaround for both Barcelona and Las Palmas, as both clubs came out of the Copa Del Rey round of 16 stage with victories earlier this week. Even though Barcelona sit third in La Liga and have only lost twice this season, some have been critical of the team, and don’t think they’ll be able to overcome their rivals Real Madrid for the league title.
Barca’s recent Copa Del Rey win also saw the club’s famous Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar front line combine to score their 300th club goal. Suarez also earned his 100th club goal in that game.
Recap
With Luis Enrique deciding to rest regulars like Pique, Rakitic and Neymar, some thought that could cost the home side. However, Barca being who they are, showed dominance in the first half against their opponents. They held 60 percent of possession in the first half, had the most shots on target, and could’ve scored more goals if Las Palmas keeper Javi Varas wasn’t in goal.
Luis Suarez opened the scoring in the 14th minute off a nice low cross from Andre Gomes. Gomes himself could’ve had a brace, but he had difficulty placing his shots on target. A total team effort from Barcelona, with each player having an impact.
In the second half, Barcelona opened the floodgates and scored three goals in the span of 10 minutes. Messi put his side 2-0 up after he pounced on a rebound in the 52nd minute. Suarez then added his second of the match, bending a ball past Varas and Turan made it 4-0 after he slotted in Suarez’s shot on goal in the 59th.
The goal fest ended with Aleix Vidal scoring his first Barcelona goal in the 80th, as he made a run down the middle and connected on a pass in the middle of the box. Before this match, Las Palmas’ biggest defeat was a 4-1 loss to Real Sociedad in the second week. This was the first time they allowed five goals since they joined La Liga in 2015-16 season.
