Gabon take on Guinea-Bissau as the 2017 African Cup of Nations begins on Saturday. Here’s all the info you need to watch the match.
Every two years, members of the Confederation of African Football participate in the African Cup of Nations. In 2017, the winner qualifies for the Confederations Cup, which takes place in Russia ahead of the 2018 World Cup.
Ivory Coast won the last African Cup of Nations held in 2015, but Gabon holds a slight advantage this time around as they’re hosting this year’s tournament. In their first match of the tournament, Gabon will take on Guinea-Bissau.
Sixteen teams qualified for this year’s tournament back in 2015. They all earned the right to play in this tournament after each winning or finishing runner-up in their respective qualifying group. Despite being the hosts of this year’s African Cup of Nations, Gabon played in the qualifying games as Libya were originally scheduled to host. However, Libya lost the right to host due to the ongoing political conflict in the country.
Gabon’s fans should be out in full force as they kick off the African Cup of Nations. The African nation will also look to begin the tournament with a favorable result. However, Guinea-Bissau will look to pull an upset over the host nation.
