Jawun Evans
PG, Oklahoma St.

What to love: Oklahoma State’s Jawun Evans is probably the best pick-and-roll point guard in the class. Eliciting comparisons to Chris Paul, Evans is slithery with the ball in his hands, explosive enough to split double teams and crafty enough to get into the lane and break down defenses. He is the obvious focal point of the Cowboys’ offense this season with a 32.8 percent usage rate and 37.9 percent assist rate. Evans is averaging a pace adjusted 24.3 points and 7.3 assists per 40 minutes. Defensively, it’s worth mentioning that Evans has done a great job creating turnovers this season. He’s averaging 3.1 steals per 40 minutes in head coach Brad Underwood’s halfcourt pressure scheme.
What to hate: At 6-foot-1, Evans is on the smaller side of NBA point guards, which is always a scary prospect when trying to evaluate how well a player will translate at the NBA level when nearly every opponent is bigger than him. It’s a concern worth watching with Evans in particular because he already struggles to finish at the rim. Evans had made just 50.9 percent of his layups or dunks this season despite taking nearly half of his total field goal attempts in that area, per Hoop-Math. On a positive note, though, Evans does an excellent job of getting to the foul line. He’s attempting 9.2 free throws per 40 minutes this season.
