Coming out of the holidays, Bournemouth turned in a performance against Hull that was both dismal and frightfully unlucky. Despite dominating possession and having better overall chances, the Cherries fell to a previously reeling Hull squad which played with a particular intensity in their first league match under Marco Silva. Benik Afobe was a rare bit of light for Bournemouth, and Junior Stanislas provided the only goal of the day for the side. A more focused defense will have to return if Eddie Howe’s side wants to return to the top half of the table.
On the other side, Watford played Middlesbrough to a draw between sneaky teams. Like Boro, the Hornets have the ability to surprise better sides — see September’s 3-1 lashing of Manchester United — but more often stumble, as in the 4-1 loss to Tottenham which began the calendar year. Watford suffer from a lack of consistent scoring options, as Etienne Capoue leads the team with a mere five goals, tied for lowest total to lead a team in the Premier League.
