Hoop-Dreaming: DraftKings NBA GPP Plays for Monday 1-23-17
Thanks for clicking! I am going to be breaking down tonight’s DraftKings NBA action and discussing the various picks that are aimed to help win some money on DraftKings. The picks are mainly geared for GPP tournaments and will carry more risk but also offer more reward. After all, we are seeking to have one of our tickets be the winner among hundreds of thousands of other entries.
There is a 9 game NBA slate on the DraftKings docket tonight. Most of the games are expected to remain competitive and there are currently zero games anticipated to have less than 200 total points. LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers (-6) make their only regular season appearance in New Orleans against the Pelicans. However, most DFS eyes will be on the Houston Rockets (-5) and the Milwaukee Bucks in an uptempo match-up.
Of course, there are always injuries which will open the door for some players to significantly outperform their salary. Make sure and check Fantasy CPR for other helpful NBA articles. Also, don’t forget to look for lineup changes periodically throughout the day and especially before tipoff. You can also look for me in your GPP tournaments. Let’s take a look at tonight’s games.
Point Guards and Shooting Guards
Looking to take advantage of a weak Charlotte Hornets defensive frontcourt, John Wall ($9,300) will likely be under-owned tonight. Wall is volatile with his production which often leaves owners with a bad taste in their mouths and leaves him in a perfect spot for roster differentiation.
After a couple nice games in a row, Jamal Crawford ($4,400) has seen a slight rise in salary but has yet to shoot the ball well. Streaky shooters are excellent targets in GPP’s and while he is obviously risky, I think he’s worth the risk.
Most of the DFS eyes will be on James Harden ($12,100) and Giannis Antetokounmpo ($10,600) as they square off in a battle of “Point Guards”. These two are great examples of the new crop of guards that are unconventional and versatile. Both are triple-double threats every night and pose matchup problems for opposing teams. Tonight the advantage goes to Giannis with his length, but the game will be entertaining to watch.
All the attention in Milwaukee will distract from Russel Westbrook ($11,500) whose salary is quite affordable for his potential output. At a lower price than his former Thunder teammate Harden, Westbrook offers all the upside and more. He has the ability to stuff the stat sheet with rebounds, blocks, and steals which make the difference in fantasy basketball tournaments.
Small Forwards and Power Forwards
Despite being a consistent performer for the Utah Jazz and having a mid-range salary, Gordon Hayward ($7,000) continues to remain under-owned in tournaments. He is in a good position tonight going against the Oklahoma City Thunder forwards and should have no problem hitting 6x value.
The Atlanta Hawks are hot lately and Thabo Sefolosha ($3,600) is highly risky but has an inexpensive salary that makes him worth a look. The wing position has been hard to predict for the Hawks but this could work in our advantage.
Coming back from injury Jon Leuer ($4,300) has had a couple good games and looks to keep it rolling tonight against the Sacramento Kings. Leuer is another high risk and high reward player with a salary low enough to justify a roster spot.
For the New York Knicks, Kristaps Porzingis ($6,800) has had a drop in salary and has fallen behind the shadow of the drama surrounding the Knicks. He has breakout capability and should be under-owned due to his recent injuries.
The Brooklyn Nets are at home and Trevor Booker ($5,000) generally goes unnoticed in DFS circles due to his inconsistent production. Booker is a flier tonight and useful for differentiating your roster.
Centers – The Men in the Middle
After a couple of games back from injury, Clint Capela ($4,000) should be rested and good to go against the Bucks tonight. Capela has enormous upside at this price point and the Milwaukee frontcourt offers a nice matchup to get back on track.

His ups and downs lead people to stay away from Hassan Whiteside ($7,700) but he actually has been consistent for his salary range. He has hit 6x his value 40% of the time this year which puts him in consideration tonight. He could flop but he could also have a monster outing.
The Bucks rotation leaves Greg Monroe ($4,400) a big question mark every night, which is pretty standard for any Bucks player outside of Giannis. He has seen a significant drop in salary recently and will be playing in a faster paced game than usual.
The Kings will hop on the back of DeMarcus Cousins ($10,500) for the rest of the year and he looks like he might be ready for the responsibility. The talent has always been there for Cousins but his maturity has held him back. Perhaps this is where playing for Team USA and winning a gold medal will pay off for “Boogie”. His usage rate will be off the charts and his salary does not yet reflect that.
