For fans of Archie Comics, the names of the characters in The CW’s Riverdale may be familiar, but that seems to where the similarities end. Or maybe I just missed the issue growing up when Archie Andrews sleeps with his music teacher.
Yes, in the grand tradition of former The CW series, One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl and 90210, Archie and his friends are about to be part of a soapy, angst-filled high school drama. Riverdale even comes with a murder mystery element.
But first and most importantly, what are all the famous characters from the comics up to at the start of this gritty reboot?
Riverdale starts on the first day of school after summer vacation, and with the town still dealing with the tragic death of Jason Blossom. This event has caused Archie Andrews to question his direction in life, and now he wants to be a musician. But now that his secret relationship with his music teacher is over, Archie turns to Josie McCoy to be his new music mentor. That is when she isn’t too busy with her band, Josie and the Pussycats.
Archie will have his hands full anyway as the third piece of the famous Archie-Betty-Veronica love triangle comes to Riverdale in the pilot. Betty and Archie have known each other for years, and Betty is hoping they will become more than friends this school year. But then new girl Veronica Lodge arrives to complicate matters. She will also be a new friend for Betty as she deals with her mother and mean girl Cheryl Blossom.
Not to be forgotten, Jughead Jones is an aspiring writer in this version, and he is no longer friends with Archie. Based on the promotional photos, Jughead uses the diner — clearly an updated version of the malt shop from the comics — as a place to write. It appears to double as a hangout for all of the main characters.
