On the first night of X Games Aspen 2017, 16-year-old Hailey Langland made history by landing a trick never done before by a female in any competition

Every year when X Games Aspen rolls around, by the end of it you’re left saying that there’s nothing more that can be done. That’s the world of snowboarding, skiing and extreme sports. It’s all about pushing boundaries and what you can do with your craft. Yet just when you think there can’t be anything more done, someone like 16-year-old Hailey Langland comes around and makes history on the first night of X Games Aspen 2017.

Competing in the first ever women’s Big Air snowboarding event, the young Langland was racing against the clock to get one more run in and one more massive trick. In that moment, you can’t hold anything back on a stage like X Games Aspen. And Langland didn’t do that in the slightest.

The 16-year-old went for it as she let loose a cab double cork on her final run. Despite the fact that it had never been completed by any female in any competition and any discipline before, Langland came down clean as whistle. And as she rode through the bottom of the slope, she knew that she was golden:

Obviously the addition of Big Air to women’s snowboarding at X Games Aspen 2017 affords the opportunity for riders and competitors to pull of tricks that we’ve never seen before. However, that doesn’t lessen the wow-factor of seeing such a young rider pull it off in such a clutch moment.

When the women’s Big Air rolls around in 2018, we might see others pull out the same trick. Fans might also see history be made again. However, Langland pulled off something never done before at just 16 years old—and earned a gold medal for her troubles.
