Transfer deadline day looms. Here are five transfer deadline day disasters we would love to see on Tuesday.
The January transfer window closes Tuesday, which can mean only one thing: mistakes are about to get made. Transfer deadline day is, for some reason, usually full of excitement and anticipation, as clubs desperately scramble for the last-minute panic buys that will propel them wherever they want to go in the second half of the season.
The Premier League has become the world’s best when it comes to unnecessary January spending, and despite what has been a quiet window so far, there should be some fireworks on deadline day. In that vein, we take a look at five transfer deadline day disasters we can’t wait to see.
5. John Terry to West Ham
Chelsea’s John Terry has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge for some time now. The former England captain doesn’t appear to be part of Antonio Conte’s long term plans, and if he wants some consistent game time, then it looks like he’ll need to leave the Bridge. At 36, Terry knows his playing years are limited, and while he’s made it painfully clear he would love to stay at Chelsea, the promise of a starting spot somewhere else may be too good to turn down.
He’s no spring chicken, but his reading of the game and leadership qualities would be beneficial to most Premier League sides outside the top six. In fact, he was arguably Chelsea’s best center-back when they were still playing with four in defense. The switch to a back three, as much as any signs of age, is what did it for Terry at Chelsea.
That being the case, we think the best move for Terry would be from Chelsea to fellow London club West Ham. The Hammers have struggled in defense all season, and could use the in-your-face leadership style Terry brings to the table. Slaven Bilic has recently used three center-backs himself, which would only make Terry’s redemption sweeter. There may be no actual good reasons for this transfer, but the thought of a tearful Terry applauding Chelsea’s away support after West Ham’s inevitable defeat when the two sides play at the London Stadium in March seems like too good an opportunity to pass up.
