The Texas Longhorns need to land these five recruiting targets leading up to National Signing Day 2017

Transition is certainly the name of the game for the Texas Longhorns as they head into National Signing Day 2017. While Charlie Strong did his share of recruiting, it’s time for new head coach Tom Herman to finish strong and try and get Hook ‘Em the recruits they need to top off what could be a promising class of incoming recruits.

Herman proved over his time in Houston as a head coach and even as the offensive coordinator for Ohio State how capable of a recruiter that he is. Now he has the reigns at one of the most high-profile programs in the country and the opportunity to truly put that to the test.

Coming into National Signing Day, Texas’ class isn’t overly impressive, even if there is some talent there to speak of. However, Herman and the Longhorns need to finish strong and land the big recruits and targets for their class to ultimately look like they’d certainly hope for it to. With that in mind, these are the five recruits that Texas must have leading up to National Signing Day.

Jordan Pouncey certainly isn’t the type of player that is going to come to Austin and be a superstar right away. In fact, the correct argument would be for him doing quite the opposite. Though he has solid size and is tremendously athletic and agile, Pouncey enters college football as a project. If he gets the right work—especially from an offensive-mind like Herman’s—he could develop into a tremendous asset, though.

With that said, Pouncey is also the type of player and recruit that the Longhorns need to both land and properly work with under Herman. Top-end talent hasn’t always been an issue at Texas. However, finding the proper depth and playmakers behind those top-tier players has been one of their greatest struggles. So landing a high-upside player like Pouncey would be a nice addition for Texas.
