A look at the Penn State Nittany Lions recruiting class as National Signing Day is upon us.

Penn State is coming off a football revival in 2016. They rebounded after being backtracked by the 2011 Jerry Sandusky scandal, but finally rose back to relevance by winning the Big 12 Conference Championship game and made it to the Rose Bowl. USC would defeat the Nittany Lions in an offensive affair, which still sent the team into the offseason on a high note after what they accomplished during the season and making it further than many expected.

This makes Penn State’s National Signing Day an interesting one to see if they can build off their success in 2016. They have no five-star recruits from 247Sports list, but 10 four-star prospects highlight their class heading into National Signing Day.

Lamont Wade is a cornerback out of Clairton, PA that enrolled at PSU earlier this month. He committed in December 2016 and is the No. 5 player at his position among the 2017 recruits. There should be a starting spot for Wade with Jordan Smith graduating. He would play opposite John Reid and make for a potentially formidable duo covering wide receivers.

Another intriguing prospect for Penn State is four-star safety Jonathon Sutherland. One of the two starting safety spots is open with Malik Golden graduating, so Sutherland may work his way into the mix early for the defense. He hasn’t enrolled in school yet but should be a lock to officially sign.

This has been a defensive-filled class for Penn State so far, who already has positions like quarterback and running back locked up. They can continue building up the defensive front to stop the ground attack of some of the Big Ten’s top schools, especially Ohio State and their usually stout running game.
