Star Wars: Darth Maul #1 review

Darth Maul’s passion for hunting and desire to satisfy his bloodlust take center stage in Star Wars: Darth Maul #1.

Every character in the Star Wars universe has a background steeped in rich details that provide insight into the character and explain how he became the person we have come to know onscreen. In Star Wars: Darth Maul #1 we get a chance to learn more about Darth Maul and how he came to be the terrifying Sith Lord we know and love. (And love to hate.)

From the comic: “Darth Maul, Book I, Part I. In the shadows, an ancient enemy stirs. The Sith—practitioners of the dark side of the Force long thought to be destroyed—secretly work to undermine and eventually overthrow the Jedi Order, the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy. Two members of the Sith order—Darth Sidious and his apprentice Darth Maul—secretly await their moment to strike. But while Sidious plans an intricate series of deceptions and machinations, Maul grows restless. The moment of revenge is close at hand, and he is unwilling to wait much longer.”

Darth Maul is running out of patience. Nothing can satisfy his desire to kill Jedi, but he’s only an apprentice and he must follow his master’s commands. Instead, Darth Maul hunts rathtars in lieu of what he truly wants to do, namely, kill Jedi. (Remember the rathtars from The Force Awakens? Yeah, those guys.)

Darth Sidious knows Darth Maul is growing impatient, but he has very intricate plans in motion and everything must be done in proper order. He sends Darth Maul on a mission to Kellux to assist their allies in the trade federation. They have a pirate problem on their hands and they don’t want to alert the Republic because that will expose the work they want to keep on the down low.

On the one hand, Darth Maul has no choice but to obey his master’s orders. However, Darth Maul has his own interests to think about as well.

Star Wars: Darth Maul #1 is a beautiful book with stunning art and a compelling story for Star Wars fans new and old. The comic format is a perfect medium to tell Darth Maul’s story, allowing readers insight into what he’s thinking and why he does what he does. There’s no question there is much more to learn about the future Sith Lord.
