Did anyone think that Maryland would be this good in 2016-17? The Terrapins were losing Robert Carter, Rasheed Sulaimon, Diamond Stone and Jake Layman from a solid team, but only Melo Trimble returned as a true starter. However, Maryland looks like the Big Ten’s best team.
Through the first month of Big Ten play, the Terrapins went 8-1 and are currently tied with Wisconsin atop the conference standings. They are also 20-2 overall and it has been due to a mixture of young talent with Trimble’s leadership taking control.
Maryland also has one of the best defenses in the country, allowing just 66 points per game — defense clearly wins championships. Trimble is truly playing like a Big Ten Player of the Year candidate, averaging 17 points and 3.5 assists per game.
As for Purdue, the Boilermakers were expected to be one of the conference’s top teams, especially with the return of Isaac Haas and Caleb Swanigan. The Boilermakers just routed No. 25 Northwestern at home, 80-59, and are looking to stay in the title hunt.
People knew Swanigan was going to be solid in his second season, but not this effective. The sophomore forward is averaging a team-high 18.8 points and 12.9 rebounds per game. He’s also added a 3-point shooting element to his game, making 50 percent from long range.
Haas is also having a solid season, averaging 13.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while shooting 60 percent from the floor. The guard play has been the only true concern, but this team is dominant down low.
