Lady Gaga was the Super Bowl 51 halftime performer, and found a way to slide in a shout out to her parents in front of millions of people.
We knew that Grammy-winning artist Lady Gaga — who is also an Oscar-noninated song writer — was going to be performing the Super Bowl LI halftime show. What we didn’t know was whether or not she’d be joined by any guests on stage.
Traditionally, the additional halftime performers were announced well ahead of time but this year we didn’t hear a peep. While it wouldn’t be the first time that a performer ended up being the sole performer of the halftime show (Prince went solo back in 2006 and so did The Who a few years later), the stage was too large to have the idea of her going it alone be easily accepted.
While Gaga ended up going the performance alone, not being joined by anyone else, she was spiritually joined by her parents. During a performance of ‘Million Reasons’, Gaga tied up the end of the song by giving a shoutout to her parents.
Everyone wholly expected Gaga to make some sort of a political statement at halftime. Given the current climate in America, from the Muslim ban to the fact that the president is an admitted sexual abuser, the halftime show became valuable real estate for making an anti-Trump statement.
The number of celebrities that have spoken out against Trump is up there, which means it wouldn’t have been hard to Gaga to find someone to join her and support her message.
Now the question is how will people react to the performance. Last year, when Beyonce gave a ‘Black Lives Matter’ themed performance with Coldplay and Bruno Mars, people lost their damn minds.
For a second straight year a political statement was made at the biggest party in the world
