Matt Ryan’s touchdown pass to Tevin Coleman extended the second half lead for the Falcons.
The first half of Super Bowl 51 saw the Atlanta Falcons offense dominate. Matt Ryan threw a touchdown pass, Devonta Freeman ran in for one, and Robert Alford snagged a pick-six off Tom Brady to give them a 21-3 lead at the half.
In the second half, things stayed status quo for the Falcons. They stopped another New England Patriots drive and took over. This saw them drive down the field with wide receiver Taylor Gabriel breaking Super Bowl 49 hero, Malcolm Butler’s legs along the way.
To cap off the drive, Ryan would connect with Tevin Coleman on a six-yard pass for the touchdown. This put the Falcons up, 28-3 with eight-and-a-half minutes to go in the third quarter.

Hello, @Teco_Raww!
Hello, TOUCHDOWN!!! #SB51 #RiseUp https://t.co/dVL2nPKItX
This is an unprecedented deficit for the Patriots, who mostly dominated their opponents in the 2016 regular season and the playoffs. They’ve run into a defense that’s kept them under control and an offense that has looked dynamic throughout Super Bowl 51. Ryan, Jones, Gabriel, Freeman, and Mohamed Sanu have all played a role in this game to give the Falcons a big lead.
On the other hand, the Patriots receivers have fallen short on a few occasions. This has come from dropped passes, which is uncharacteristic for players like Julian Edelman and Chris Hogan. Dion Lewis has struggled as well.

The Falcons continue to push forward this lead while the Patriots are struggling. Things need to swing in New England’s favor soon before this lead extends again.
