How can you watch the series premiere of Legion online?
The series premiere of Legion, a new show from FX Productions in association with Marvel, will take the viewer inside the mind of a resident at a psychiatric hospital.
This series takes place in, as one producer described it, one of the parallel universes to the larger X-Men franchise. The executives at Marvel have not ruled out having any direct connections or crossovers between the movies and TV series in the future, however none are present initially because they want the TV series to “stand on its own.”
David Haller, the patient, was diagnosed with Schizophrenia early in life, and has spent the years since in and out of psychiatric care. However, over the course of the series both Haller and the viewer will learn that he was in fact misdiagnosed, as he is actually a mutant possessing powerful telepathic and telekinetic abilities, among others. In the comics where this story originated, Haller is actually the son of Professor X, a well-known and powerful mutant. However the TV series may go in a different direction, either changing the connection or removing it completely.
It is unclear exactly how much Haller knows about his past going into the series. It is also unclear if Professor X even knows that he exists at this point. In the comics he initially does not.
The official synopsis reads:
"‘David considers whether the voices he hears might be real.’"
While it unlikely that the first episode will provide the character any hard answers, how far it takes him on the path to realization remains to be seen. Judging by the preview, I would say that the premiere will start David on a journey towards self-acceptance, while exploring the damage that societal pressures and expectations can have on a person. Especially one who knows that he doesn’t fit their idea of normal, but is unable on unwilling to change in order to do so.
