Could the Dallas Stars be willing to take on Marc-Andre Fleury’s contract to solve their goaltending woes?

The Dallas Stars came into the 2016-17 season knowing goaltending was going to be a weakness. However, they thought their offense would be good enough to overcome it. So far, it hasn’t. After losing three straight games in regulation, the Stars are starting to get a little bit desperate. And as they say, desperate times call for desperate measures. One of the measures in question could involve trading for Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. According to Pierre LeBrun, the Stars and Pens have discussed a trade involving him.

"I’m told that there at least been a very preliminary discussion between Pittsburgh and Dallas regarding Marc-Andre Fleury, but I stress preliminary because I don’t think there’s anything there at this point. But certainly there’s been contact and sometimes you just do that so that if you have to circle back at the last moment, you know that you’ve at least established contact. We’ll see."

He discussed this on TSN 1050 in Toronto. A trade for Fleury is certainly plausible. The Penguins love their young goalie Matt Murray, who they recently signed to an extension. Because of Fleury’s no movement clause and modified no trade clause, he has to approve any trade. However, considering Murray’s presence, he is likely open to a trade.

Trading Fleury is important for the Penguins because he has to be protected in the upcoming expansion draft. This means Murray would get exposed and indefinitely picked by the Vegas Golden Knights.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Stars offer the Penguins for Fleury. Especially since Dallas already has Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi. The duo has a combined cap hit of $10.4 million a season through the 2017-18 season. But Dallas has to upgrade their goaltending and Fleury could be a viable option for them to do so.
