Stephen Curry and Under Armour have been involved in an amicable relationship over the past two years. But if this latest incident is any indication, they might be heading towards a contentious split.

After meeting with President Donald Trump, Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank seemed to take a liking to him. He doubled down on that notion when he went on CNBC and called Trump an “asset to the country”.

Many wondered how Curry, one of Under Armour’s premier clients, would react to that statement. It’s been well publicized that Steve Kerr is not in favor of Trump, so whether he went positive or negative, Curry was going to be running counter to some sort of authority figure. He had to choose his words carefully, so let’s just pull up his comments and OH MY GOD:

Curry’s weigh-in on Trump may have been a lot more light-hearted than Kerr’s, but his message rings just as clear. Curry also deserves credit for not staying silent on an issue he strongly believes in, and for not being concerned about potentially losing a major sponsor.

At the same time, his comments are also amusing enough that maybe people won’t necessarily lose their minds over it the same way they would over Colin Kaepernick’s anthem protest. If anything, even the most ardent Trump supporters should appreciate the humor in what Curry said. Maybe? Right?

Curry doesn’t need Under Armour to serve as his brand. Pull-up jumpers from impossible distances, and hitting a shimmy or twerk should constitute that already. If him and Kevin Plank have a score to settle, they can do so on their own terms, because the Warriors certainly won’t welcome distractions such as that.

But in the meantime, Curry deserves a round of applause for speaking his mind with clever wordplay.
