Jiri Hudler summed up the Dallas Stars season by accidentally scoring on his own net during a delayed penalty.

The 2016-17 NHL season for the Dallas Stars has been a lesson in Murphy’s Law. Pretty much everything that could have gone wrong for them has gone wrong for them. They’ve been plagued by injuries and their goaltending has once again been awful. No play sums up their season more than Jiri Hudler’s own goal against the Ottawa Senators. During a delayed penalty, the forward dumped the puck to nobody and the puck naturally found its way into the vacated net. It wound up being the game winning goal as Dallas lost 3-2 to the Senators.

It’s been that kind of season for Dallas. Even fans have to laugh about how accurately the play sums up their season. It’s remarkably difficult and rare to score an own goal during a delayed penalty. You almost have to try to do it. But that’s not what happens here. Hudler dumps the puck and it magically finds its way between two defensemen. You can’t even do anything about that except laugh to keep yourself from crying.

Dallas figured to be Stanley Cup contenders after nearly making it to the Western Conference Finals despite not having Tyler Seguin. However, their young defensemen haven’t been nearly as good as the team anticipated. They lost two quality defensemen in Alex Goligoski and Jason Demers, figuring their blue line depth would replace them.

Moreover, Kari Lehtonen hasn’t improved much from last season. The Stars are the most disappointing team in the Western Conference this season. If it wasn’t for the Tampa Bay Lightning, they’d be the most disappointing team in the NHL.

Unless they can turn around their season, Dallas will likely miss the postseason for the seventh time in nine seasons.
