Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0 at Anfield on Saturday, Feb. 11. Here are all the highlights from the Premier League match.
Liverpool haven’t done much right in 2017, but they’ve always stepped up their game against the league’s best teams under Jurgen Klopp. In that sense, Tottenham may have been a welcome opponent.
The last time the Reds played well was in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea — a result sandwiched between losses to Swansea and Hull.
The Reds were phenomenal to open the match against Spurs, pressing and running off the ball with the energy and enthusiasm that has so sorely been lacking over the past month and a half.
Klopp’s favored front three — Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane — were electric, with Mane the standout.
The Senegalese winger tormented Tottenham’s stand-in left-back Ben Davies, beating him twice in the space of two minutes to give Liverpool a 2-0 lead in the first half. He almost made it three shortly after, but was denied by a good save from Hugo Lloris.
Spurs seemed stunned by the speed and intensity of Liverpool’s pressing, but still maintained a threat on the break. Heung-min Son had their best chance of the match, but Simon Mignolet stood up well to keep the Korean off the score sheet.
The second half saw Liverpool drop off, but they were no less threatening on the break. Unlike so many other games this season, their attacking verve didn’t come at the expense of defensive solidity.
But again, we’ve seen that before with Liverpool against the league’s best. With games against Leicester and Burnley coming up soon, there’s still a little way to go before we can say the Reds’ slump is over.
