According to new betting odds, the Chicago Cubs are no longer the sole favorite to win the 2017 World Series.
During the entirety of this Major League Baseball offseason, the World Series champion Chicago Cubs (yes, that’s still a strange sentence to say) have been the favorites to once again take the title in 2017 and become the first back-to-back champions since the New York Yankees won three straight from 1998-2000. And barring any major injuries, there’s no reason to think that they couldn’t repeat. Sure, they lost Dexter Fowler to the Cardinals and David Ross to retirement but the majority of the big pieces are back. The pitching staff is anchored by the trio of Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks and Jake Arrietta and the big bats of MVP Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, Addison Russell and the returning Kyle Schwarber will likely get the Cubs a few victories over the course of 162 games.
The day after the Cubs won the World Series, Bovada had them as huge favorites to repeat, setting the odds at 7-2, with the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers way behind them at 9-1. Just over a month later on December 7, the Red Sox closed the gap at 11-2 with the Cubs at 15-4. And in the newest odds released at Bovada on Monday, the Red Sox and Cubs are now co-favorites to win the 2017 World Series.
It should be noted that the odds in December were released just one day after Boston acquired Chris Sale from the White Sox but outside of a few small deals here and there, not a lot has changed in two months. Nevertheless, with pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training this week, the Cubs are no longer the sole favorite to win the 2017 World Series.
