Sergio Romo compiled a 2.58 ERA and in 515 appearances with San Francisco Giants on top of three World Series titles.
Sergio Romo refuses to believe him and Brian Wilson was treated the same way at the time of departure with the San Francisco Giants, despite similar circumstances. Romo signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.
Romo spent his first nine seasons with the Giants, winning three world series titles in five seasons. Romo’s former teammate and fellow relief pitcher Brian Wilson were in the Giants bullpen for two of those titles.
Wilson signed with the Dodgers in the summer of 2013 after eight seasons in the Bay Area. KNBR’s Paul McCaffrey says he received text messages from Romo about the comparisons between him and Wilson.
“No lie, I am not (Brian) Willson, nor did I leave with a sour taste in my mouth about anything, even though I am no longer needed there,” Romo texted McCaffrey. “I am now left with only trying to be the best Sergio Romo that I can be, but is no longer wanted on the Giants’ roster. It hurts though, that after 12 years of only knowing the Orange and Black, that I am forced to leave my home that has given me so much.”
Especially relevant, Giants broadcaster Duane Kuiper’s comments about Romo’s move to Southern California were intriguing.
“I have no problems with him going wherever he wants. He’s earned that right,” Kuiper told KNBR’s Murphy and Mac. “But I also don’t have any problems not cheering for him, too.”
“There wasn’t anybody that really took that rivalry between the Giants and the Dodgers to heart more than he would,” Kuiper said. “When he faces the Giants, I don’t think it’s going to be a friendly deal. I think there’s going to be some problems, I do.”
