Vince Young in talks to sign with CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders

Vince Young’s agent Leigh Steinberg tweets the quarterback is in talks to sign with the CFL’s Saskatchewan Roughriders.

It appears Vince Young’s comeback to football is becoming a reality. Young’s agent, Leigh Steinberg, tweeted out that the quarterback has entered negotiations with the Canadian Football League’s Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Young has been out of football since 2014, when he failed to make the Cleveland Browns. The former Texas Longhorns quarterback hasn’t played in the NFL since 2011, when he played for the Philadelphia Eagles. Since August 2014, Young has worked for the University of Texas.

At the University of Texas, Young was one of the most dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks in college football history. He concluded his college career by leading Texas to a National Championship in January 2006. Texas defeated USC 41-38 on a last-second touchdown run by Young.

After his college career, Young was drafted third overall by the Tennessee Titans. Young won rookie of the year, but his tenure in Tennessee ended after five years. Constant clashes between Young and former head coach Jeff Fisher led to both being let go by the Titans. Young’s NFL career was promising, but he never developed as an NFL passer. Young completed 57.9 percent of his passes, but threw more interceptions than touchdowns.

Coming out of college, Young would have been the perfect quarterback for the CFL. But after six years out of football, it’s unclear what type of athlete the Roughriders will be getting. The inactivity will not be working in Young’s favor when he attempts to adjust to the rules of the CFL. In Canada, there are only three downs, the field is both longer and wider and there are 12 players on the field.

The Riders currently have veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn under contract. Glenn is entering his 17th season in the CFL. Despite throwing for 270 career touchdowns and 48,782 yards, Glenn has never been viewed as one of the league’s top starting quarterbacks. Currently, Glenn is the lowest paid starting quarterback in the league.
