The Miami Dolphins were a surprise playoff team in 2016. What do they have to do to make sure that was not a fluke appearance?

It is safe to say the Dolphins found a winner in Adam Gase. Gase essentially turned the Dolphins around at midseason, going from 1-4 to 10-6 and a playoff berth.

Gase now enters his second season, and it may just be the beginning for this team. However, they do still have holes, and while some injuries left them depleted by January, they were an easy out in the playoffs. What positions should the Dolphins hit to continue their progression under Gase?

5. Safety

On paper, the safety position may not be a huge need. Reshad Jones, the star of the secondary is recovering from a torn pectoral. Isa Abdul-Quddus ended his season on the IR with a neck injury, and while Michael Thomas looked solid stepping in for him, he is a restricted free agent.

Abdul-Quddus was serviceable, but still, not a top-end starter. Thomas showed enough filling in that some team may bite and push the Dolphins to decide whether to spend on him or take a compensation pick instead.

At the end of the day this is more of a depth need, but a need nonetheless. The Dolphins will likely not address the position in the first two rounds, but it could be assumed that in the later rounds, a safety could certainly be at play. Jordan Poyer and Rashad Johnson are two young names to watch for as they can serve as depth options, and have the capability to start if need be.

The Dolphins have a few major needs on the team and will hit their four positions harder than most. However, with injury and free agent questions, they may be doing some touching up in the back end of the secondary as well.
