Pokemon GO: How to get and use evolution items
After a huge update to the mobile game, Pokemon GO has become more complicated than it used to be.
Generation 2 Pokemon are here and the Pokemon GO craze is back in full swing.
Players of the mobile game can now find 80 new Pokemon roaming around the world, waiting to be caught. In addition, new items and avatar customizations have been added into the game as well.
Among the new additions to the game are a group of items which pay homage to a feature in the old GameBoy Pokemon games: evolution items.

While some Pokemon can be evolved after obtaining the necessary number of candies, now there are a few Pokemon who require both candies and a certain evolution item in order to be evolved to its final form.
Five evolution items are in Pokemon GO. Here is a list of them, in addition to the Pokemon it evolves:
- Dragon Scale: Seadra evolves to Kingdra
- Kings Rock: Poliwhirl evolves to Politoed / Slowbro evolves to Slowking
- Metal Coat: Onix evolves to Steelix / Scyther evolves to Scizor
- Sun Stone: Gloom evolves to Bellossom / Sunkern evolves to Sunflora
- Upgrade: Porygon evolves to Porygon2
As you can see, most of these evolution items actually apply to Gen 1 Pokemon, meaning players will find that they will need to reinvest time in capturing some old Pokemon for candy. The evolved form of these Gen 1 Pokemon after using a stone does, however, fall into the Gen 2 category of Pokemon.

As for how to find evolution items, they can be obtained by visiting PokeStops but they are extremely rare. The chance of one dropping from a PokeStop is slight.

From what players have shared, the chance of an evolution item dropping may increase slightly as you continue your PokeStop visiting streak day by day. For each consecutive day you visit a PokeStop, you get more and more rewards. Many players have reported receiving their first evolution item after they hit the maximum day streak, which is seven days in a row.
