Two years have passed since the same two teams faced each other at the same stage of the Champions League, with Atletico Madrid coming out on top after a thrilling penalty shootout.
Atletico Madrid have been a regular fixture in the latter stages of the Champions League, finalists in two of the last three seasons. However, this season feels a little different and not necessarily for the better.
Diego Simeone’s team is fourth in La Liga and have not shown the same level of grit, consistency and domination against weaker opposition as in previous years. Atletico’s back line will be deprived of the services of Diego Godin and Juanfran, as well as goalkeeper Jan Oblak, all out due to injury.
Having Godin out may prove fatal, as the Uruguayan center-back has been an absolute force as a defender and leader of men for Atletico. Look for Kevin Gameiro to pair up with fellow Frenchman Antoine Griezmann and provide the offensive spark plug for Simeone’s men.
On the other side, Bayer Leverkusen manager Roger Schmidt could be without starting center back Johnathan Tah (injured) and they will certainly miss Hakan Calhanoglu in the midfield after he was handed a four month FIFA ban due to a breach of contract going back to 2011.
