Indianapolis Colts: 5 offseason needs
The Colts now have a new general manager. Can he undo all of the bad that Ryan Grigson has done in the past few offseasons?
The Colts clock to build a team worth competing around Andrew Luck is ticking. There are holes at almost every spot on the roster, and they are just now getting out of some of the bad contracts that the previous regime handed out. What are the most important positions for the Colts to hit in this offseason?
5. Cornerback
It had a lot to do with injury, but Vontae Davis had a poor year. He is signed on, and will likely be a starter next season but the Colts need some help behind him. Darius Butler is a free agent, and Patrick Robinson is just a guy. Even if they bring Butler back, cornerback should be a focus in some kind of way this offseason.
The Colts have learned the hard way about overspending in free agency on name value. Therefore, this regime should be coming in looking for diamonds in the rough and looking to draft well. In free agency, a lower end name such as Leonard Johnson or Trevin Wade should be on their radar more than a name like A.J. Bouye.
However, their best bet is to address this position in the draft. As mentioned, they do have some names to play immediately, and a veteran in Davis could bring a young buck along. Drafting a corner this year also gives them the ability to slowly move away from Davis as age and injury hurt his value. It may not be the first pick, but this team will look long and hard at cornerback in the second and third round.
