2017 challengers for the 50-40-90 Club in college basketball
Mike Daum – South Dakota State
(51.6 FG% – 42.7 3FG% – 87.6 FT%)
Perhaps the most impressive candidate on this list due to the sheer number of shots he’s maintained this efficiency on, South Dakota State’s Mike Daum is making a push for the 50-40-90 club. His 442 field goal attempts (so far) are more than 100 more than Luke Kennard, who comes in at 2nd on the volume list.
Though he toils in some obscurity in the Summit League, Daum has been putting together an incredible season. Per KenPom, though he uses possessions and shots for his team at a top-20 level in the country, his offensive rating remains at 121.2, nearly top-100 in the country. He also gets to the foul line at a prodigious rate. His fouls drawn per 40 mark of 7.9 is top-10 in the country.
Hoop-math’s numbers show an efficient scorer from every level. Daum takes nearly 45 percent of his shots at the rim, and hits 65 percent of them. He’s also above average from 2-point jumper range, and is hitting nearly 43 percent of his 3s. Daum is, uh, good. Very good.
The only thing that can tank his 50-40-90 campaign are those pesky free throws. Because he’s taken so many, it’ll be nearly impossible to bring it back above 90.
He’d need to go 59 for his next 59 to get back to 90 percent, with no rounding. With just one regular season game remaining, it’s not looking good.
