DeMarcus Cousins came to prove a point in his first game for New Orleans

DeMarcus Cousins is playing in his first game as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans. The multiple time All-Star is an incredible talent, but his reputation as a player is hit and miss across the league. Many see the raw numbers he puts up, along with his talent, and are willing to ignore the faults. As great as Cousins plays he’s never been able to escape the criticisms that he doesn’t play games entirely engaged and is selective on playing defense. Cousins is using his first night in New Orleans to erase any fears he might carry that over to New Orleans.

As the first quarter reached its conclusion, James Harden took the ball at the top of the 3-point arc in preparation of his attack. He was going to do what he’s done so many times before, and that is drive straight to the rim while possibly drawing a foul. There is no one better in the NBA at doing this. Cousins wasn’t having any of it.

Cousins timed his block of Harden perfectly and sent Harden’s attempt into the second row. Blocks are obviously not the only indication of defense, but they are the sign of a big man putting as much effort as he can into preventing a score. Considering Cousins reputation before reaching New Orleans, Pelicans fans have to be pretty excited when they see highlights like this happening this early in his career, against a fellow star no less. The future for Cousins in New Orleans is looking bright.
