Devin Booker celebrated P.J. Tucker staying with Suns, seconds before trade announced
Phoenix Suns’ Devin Booker is known as a sharpshooter on the court. However, he may want to hold on the ball a little longer when it comes to his celebration.
The 20-year-old guard was at Kentucky when the Suns traded away guards Isaiah Thomas and Goran Dragic before the deadline. He may not be aware of how the deadline works, but he thought his teammates were safe from the 3 p.m. ET trade deadline. Unfortunately, he celebrated the news way too soon.
Small forward PJ Tucker was traded to the Toronto Raptors for Jared Sullinger and two second round picks. According to Gavin Schall of Cronkite Sports’, Booker was celebrating keeping his teammate of two seasons, before learning that Tucker was traded to Toronto seconds later.
Tucker was drafted by the Raptors back in 2006 playing in 17 games in his rookie season. After a stint playing overseas, he was signed with the Suns in 2012.
This season, Tucker has played in 57 games, starting 17, and averaged 7 points and 6 rebounds per game. His traded comes as no surprise as his numbers have declined since averaging a career-high 9.4 points and 6.5 rebounds in his second season with the Suns.
However, the trade came to a surprise for the 31-year-old forward who considered Phoenix his home.
Booker and Tucker has a chance to reunite next season since Tucker is playing in the final year of his three-year, $16.5 million contract and will be an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Booker’s heart was in the right place celebrating the fact that his team will remain the same. He will learn that the guys you start with will not always be there when you finish.
