Grey’s Anatomy season 13, episode 14: Back Where You Belong recap
By Buckie Wells
If you thought Meredith was going to beg for her job, think again. Discover what else you missed on “Back Where You Belong” with our Grey’s Anatomy recap.
Last week on Grey’s Anatomy, Minnick finally stumbled as a teacher. After seeing what happens when the hospital stands divided, Webber helped console Steph Edwards and may have realized that he’s not handling things correctly. But in the meantime, neither Jackson or Meredith are budging on their positions.
To find out if Bailey was able to convince Meredith to return to work as her Head of Surgery, here’s our Grey’s Anatomy recap of “Back Where You Belong”:
I don’t know how in the world Amelia can just return to Meredith’s kitchen without anyone saying anything about her current situation. While I understand Grey’s Anatomy most likely wrote that to give the actress (Caterina Scorsone) some time off, it was so, so abrupt.
Our cases for the day are a kidney transfer for Jo and Edwards under the supervision of a newly-returned Karev and Webber. The young patient is Chris, whose mom will be offering her kidney for transfer. And the second patient is a homeless woman (Claire Nolan) who stumbles into the hospital in the middle of a psychotic episode. Upon examination, Riggs realizes she needs a new pacemaker.
Meanwhile, Chris’ abusive father finds them. Obviously, it triggers specific emotions in Jo, who also left an abusive relationship. In the lobby, she asks Dr. Owen Hunt to make him leave. Without asking too many questions, Owen does so. During surgery, Warren successfully removes the mother’s kidney, but by the time they transfer it to her son, Webber realizes that the mother’s second kidney doesn’t work.
Which leaves only one good kidney between mother and son, and both of them open on the table. Of course, Bailey left to have coffee with Meredith, so April’s in charge of deciding what happens with no formal protocol in place.
After replacing Claire’s pacemaker, DeLuca tracks the serial number and finds her parents. Then she’s diagnosed as a schizophrenic, which explains why she disappeared during college.
Meredith and Bailey struggle to get on the same page. But the bottom line is that Bailey needed to make a choice that would usher in a new era under Chief Bailey, not Chief Webber. So Meredith says she won’t return until Richard’s back in charge. (Despite the fact that she spent the first five minutes of the episode talking about how bored she is.)
We all know how far back Meredith and Webber’s relationship goes. It stretches back even before Grey’s Anatomy began because Webber had a relationship with Meredith’s mother while she was a child. Obviously, the results of which affected Meredith for the rest of her life. Further, Meredith and Webber haven’t always seen eye to eye either. So when Bailey reports to Webber that Meredith won’t return, he visits her at home and tells her to go get her job back.
At the hospital, Owen tells Jo that she doesn’t need to perform the father’s kidney transfer after he volunteers his own. Instead of running away, Jo advises the father to donate anonymously. And if he really wants to fix his mistakes, he should leave town as soon as possible.
"“You’re not the hero here. You don’t get to take this as a win. This is the least you can do … the very least.” – Jo"
Though Claire’s parents thought she passed away, they excitedly enter her room, only to cause Claire to panic. Luckily, with some new medication, Claire’s mind starts to sort itself out and she reunites with her parents.
Likewise, Chris’ surgery goes well, too. But after Jo leaves, she breaks down in front of the hospital and Owen comforts her. Also outside of the hospital comforting each other, we have Minnick and Arizona, who don’t like the idea of hiding their blossoming relationship any longer.

Other things to look forward to when Grey’s Anatomy returns:
- Meredith back at work
- More Meredith and Alex scenes
- What on Earth is happening with Owen and Amelia? Good grief
- Minnick and Arizona being an actual couple
- April putting Jackson in his place some more
I’m ready for everyone to get back to work and start working as a singular unit again. *sigh*
Unfortunately, the new episode of Grey’s Anatomy, “Civil War,” doesn’t air until March 9 when TGIT relaunches its Thursday night with The Catch instead of How to Get Away with Murder.
