Deron Williams was waived by the Dallas Mavericks and he will explore the free agency market.
Deron Williams is a veteran point guard that was just released by the Mavericks. After Yogi Ferrell’s explosion, the Mavericks signed him to a two-year deal and wanted to see just how far the young guard from Indiana University could take them. JJ Barea will stay on as the backup to Yogi Ferrell which leaves Deron Williams as the odd man out.
Deron Williams will look to sign with another team once he clears the waivers and there are many teams who could use his services.
Here are five teams who will be the best landing spots for Deron Williams.
5. The New Orleans Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans are looking towards the future. They established this idea through the trade they executed with the Kings to acquire DeMarcus Cousins. Deron Williams can be a part of the culture they are trying to build. Although they just signed Jarrett Jack, having more veterans hands shouldn’t be an issue.
Williams can be a valuable backup point guard to the injury-prone Jrue Holiday. Right now the Pelicans have Tim Frazier as their main backup. Frazier is young and his ceiling is backup point guard material. In many instances, Frazier has shown that he is capable of handling the backup role with savvy and other times you just shake to shake your head at some of the mistakes he makes.
Williams will add depth needed at the point guard positions for the Pelicans. He can keep the offense in sync while Holiday takes a rest or while Holiday is sidelined for long periods of time.
